Who can apply for a bank account in the Republic of Georgia?

Foreign citizens and non-residents may apply for personal or business banking in Georgia. There is no single approval rule that covers every applicant. A bank considers the whole relationship: nationality, countries of residence and tax residence, occupation or business, source of funds, expected transactions, counterparties, reason for choosing Georgia and any connection to Tbilisi, Batumi or the country more broadly.

An applicant may be living in Georgia, preparing to relocate, buying property, operating a Georgian company, receiving local income, managing international activity or seeking a practical multi-currency relationship. The reason should be genuine and supported by the documents. Simply wanting “an overseas account” is rarely as persuasive as a specific, consistent explanation of how the account will be used.

Applications from most nationalities can be considered, but being eligible to apply does not mean the account will be approved. Banks apply their own risk rules and may request more information, interview the applicant or decline without providing a detailed reason. Our first task is therefore a confidential feasibility review—not a promise.

Personal account or corporate bank account?

The account must match the activity. A personal account is intended for an individual’s own income, savings, expenses and investments. A corporate account belongs to a registered business and is used for the company’s trade. Mixing business turnover through a personal account can create compliance questions and later restrictions.

Residents, non-residents and applicants who plan to move

A Georgian residence permit is not automatically required to submit a banking application, and a foreigner may be considered while remaining non-resident. Nevertheless, residence affects the evidence and risk assessment. Someone established in Tbilisi with a local home, employment and telephone number presents a different profile from a person who has never visited the country.

Non-residents should be ready to explain why a Georgian account is useful and how it relates to their lawful activity. A planned property purchase, Georgian company, regular stays, relocation project or regional business may provide context. The bank may still assess the applicant’s home-country banking, income, tax residence and international transaction pattern.

Applicants moving to Georgia should not invent a stronger connection than they currently have. It is better to distinguish present facts from plans: state the expected arrival date, intended address, work or business and anticipated payments. If you will be in the capital, review our Tbilisi banking page. For the Black Sea region, see opening a bank account in Batumi.

In-person opening in Tbilisi or Batumi, and remote opening

For many applicants, an in-person bank visit is the most direct route. We review the profile before travel, identify the likely documents and coordinate an appointment. Tbilisi generally offers the broadest choice of specialist teams and is our primary operating location. Batumi can be convenient for residents and visitors in Adjara, but the appropriate branch and appointment availability must be confirmed in advance.

Remote opening may be considered for a suitable profile, commonly through a carefully drafted Power of Attorney and supporting KYC file. The PoA must reflect the bank process and may require notarisation, apostille or legalisation, translation and original delivery. A generic internet template can omit critical authority or include powers that a notary or bank will not accept.

Documents commonly requested

The correct file depends on the applicant. A valid passport is the starting point, not necessarily the complete file. Banks may ask for proof of residential address, residence status, tax identification, bank statements, employment evidence, contracts, invoices, tax returns or documentation of a property sale, dividend, inheritance or investment.

A corporate file normally adds the company registry extract, charter or constitutional documents, ownership chart, director and authorised signatory information, licences where relevant, contracts, invoices, website or business materials and evidence explaining how the company is funded. Every ultimate beneficial owner must be identifiable.

  • Use complete, legible documents with matching names and dates.
  • Explain genuine differences in address, spelling or transliteration.
  • Confirm whether translation, notarisation or apostille is actually required.
  • Prepare recent evidence and retain the full unedited pages.
  • Do not send sensitive scans through an unapproved channel.

Our required-documents checklist explains how to build a coherent file without paying for unnecessary certification too early.

How Georgian KYC and source-of-funds review works

KYC means that the bank must know who the client is, understand the purpose of the relationship and assess whether expected activity is lawful and credible. The review is not limited to sanctions screening. It can cover occupation, employer, business model, wealth, income, transaction countries, counterparties, expected cash use, account balances and reasons for transfers.

“Source of funds” concerns the origin of money entering the account—for example salary, consulting income, business revenue or a documented asset sale. “Source of wealth” is broader and explains how the applicant accumulated their overall financial position. A strong application connects the explanation to objective evidence and expected account activity.

Consistency matters. Turnover stated in a questionnaire should fit contracts, invoices, existing statements and the scale of the business. Incoming and outgoing countries should match actual clients and suppliers. High-risk industries, complex ownership, unexplained intermediaries or payments unrelated to the declared purpose can require deeper review. Read our practical KYC and source-of-funds guide.

Choosing a Georgian bank

Georgia has several licensed banks, and “the best bank” depends on the applicant rather than a universal ranking. Bank of Georgia and TBC Bank have extensive personal and business offerings. Other institutions, including Credo Bank and Basisbank, may be relevant for particular profiles. Current acceptance, product and remote-onboarding policies can change.

We look at the intended account use, expected currencies, transaction countries, need for cards or premium service, company structure, visit plan and the bank’s present appetite. Our primary premium-banking relationship is with Bank of Georgia and SOLO, but that relationship never guarantees acceptance and does not make BankAccount.ge an agent authorised to bind the bank.

Official bank pages can be useful starting points: Bank of Georgia information for non-residents and TBC Bank information for expats. Product marketing is not a substitute for a case-specific KYC assessment. Compare our Bank of Georgia vs TBC guide.

Expected account-opening timeline

The timeline begins before the appointment. A simple, well-documented personal case can move more quickly than a remote corporate structure with several owners and countries. Time is also affected by translation, apostille, courier delivery, appointment availability, follow-up questions and internal compliance queues.

  1. Initial review: profile, purpose, countries, source of funds and preferred route.
  2. Document preparation: tailored checklist and correction of gaps or inconsistencies.
  3. Submission or appointment: in person in Tbilisi or Batumi, or through an approved remote route.
  4. Bank review: questions, possible additional evidence and internal decision.
  5. Activation: account access, mobile banking, cards and any agreed collection or delivery arrangement.

Do not book inflexible travel solely on an assumed approval date. We coordinate the practical sequence, but the bank controls its own decision and timing. See costs and timelines for Georgian bank accounts.

Transparent professional pricing

Our fee pays for independent preparation and coordination. It is separate from bank tariffs, notary, apostille, translation, courier, card, account package or transfer charges. The exact scope is confirmed after eligibility review.

Fees do not purchase approval. If a profile is unsuitable, we aim to identify the issue before unnecessary travel or certification expense.

Tax residence, CRS and FATCA information

Opening a Georgian bank account does not by itself change your tax residence, remove reporting duties or make income tax-free. The bank may request tax identification numbers and self-certification for every relevant jurisdiction. Depending on the facts and applicable rules, account information may be reportable through the Common Reporting Standard.

United States citizens and other persons within the United States tax system may have additional FATCA and foreign-account reporting obligations. Corporate account holders may also need to identify controlling persons and their tax residences. BankAccount.ge provides application assistance, not personal tax or investment advice.

Before transferring substantial funds or changing how income is received, obtain advice from a qualified adviser in each relevant country. Give the bank accurate information and update it when residence, ownership or activity changes. Our CRS and FATCA guide explains the practical banking questions.

Common reasons an application becomes difficult

Many avoidable problems start with a vague purpose, incomplete documents or contradictions. A polished presentation cannot repair an activity the bank does not wish to accept, but clear preparation prevents ordinary gaps from becoming unnecessary concerns.

  • Stating expected turnover that is unsupported by current income or contracts.
  • Using a personal account for unexplained company or third-party payments.
  • Omitting countries, counterparties, beneficial owners or tax residences.
  • Submitting screenshots instead of complete, verifiable documents.
  • Paying for an incorrect PoA, apostille or translation before bank-route confirmation.
  • Assuming a branch visit, introduction or premium package guarantees approval.
  • Giving different explanations to the consultant, branch and compliance team.

If a previous attempt was declined, disclose it during the initial review. It may affect strategy and should not be concealed. See why Georgian bank account applications are rejected.

Start with an eligibility review—not with travel or paperwork

A useful first message includes your nationality, country of residence, tax residence, occupation or business, source of income, approximate expected monthly activity, incoming and outgoing countries, reason for choosing Georgia, preferred bank if any and whether you can visit Tbilisi or Batumi. For a company, add its jurisdiction, activity, ownership and website.

We then identify the likely account type, route, document priorities, professional scope and realistic limitations. If a personal visit is appropriate, we coordinate the appointment. If remote opening may be feasible, we confirm the process before PoA work begins.

BankAccount.ge has supported international clients since 2018 from its office at Besiki Business Center, Besiki 4, 0108 Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia. Meetings are by appointment. Batumi cases are coordinated in advance. Check your eligibility or contact our team on WhatsApp for a confidential first review.

Practical answers before you apply

Can a foreigner open a bank account in Georgia?+

Yes, foreign citizens may apply for personal or corporate accounts. Acceptance depends on the bank’s current KYC policy and the applicant’s complete profile.

Can a non-resident apply without a Georgian residence permit?+

Potentially, yes. A residence permit is not a universal precondition, but the bank will assess residence, tax residence, purpose, source of funds and the applicant’s connection to Georgia.

Is a passport the only document required?+

Not necessarily. A bank may request address, residence, tax, income, bank-statement and source-of-funds evidence, with additional corporate documents for a business account.

Can I open the account remotely?+

Remote opening may be considered for an eligible profile through a bank-acceptable process, often involving a carefully drafted and certified Power of Attorney. It is never automatic.

Should I apply in Tbilisi or Batumi?+

Tbilisi usually offers the broadest specialist availability and is our primary location. Batumi can suit applicants based in Adjara when the bank, branch and appointment are confirmed in advance.

How long does the process take?+

There is no guaranteed period. Preparation, appointment availability, translation, certification, compliance questions and the complexity of the profile all affect timing.

Does BankAccount.ge guarantee approval?+

No. We are an independent business consultancy. The selected licensed bank alone makes the approval decision and sets products, limits, fees and timing.

Which currencies are commonly available?+

Georgian banks commonly offer multi-currency relationships, but the exact accounts, cards and currencies depend on the bank’s current products and the approved client profile.

Does opening a Georgian account change my taxes?+

No. Account opening does not by itself change tax residence or remove reporting duties. Obtain advice for your own jurisdictions and provide accurate tax self-certification to the bank.

Can a Georgian LLC obtain a corporate account?+

A Georgian company may apply, including one with foreign owners. The bank reviews the business model, ownership, management, source of funding, contracts, countries and expected turnover.
