Why open a bank account in Tbilisi?

Tbilisi is the primary banking and business centre of the Republic of Georgia. For an international applicant, the practical advantage is access to a broad concentration of main branches, corporate teams, premium-banking specialists, notaries, translators and public authorities. A case that needs clarification or a second step is generally easier to coordinate when the relevant professionals are in the same city.

Foreigners come to Tbilisi for different reasons: relocation, employment, investment, property ownership, a Georgian company, regional business or day-to-day banking while living in the country. The bank will want the account purpose to match the evidence. A well-planned visit does more than place the applicant in a branch; it creates the opportunity to answer KYC questions directly and complete practical activation steps.

Tbilisi should not be confused with the US State of Georgia in search results or documents. On this page, Georgia always means the sovereign country, officially Georgia, in the South Caucasus. Our company and office are registered in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Our Tbilisi office and appointment coordination

BankAccount.ge is operated by TBILISI EXPAT LLC from Besiki Business Center, Besiki 4, 0108 Tbilisi, Georgia. Meetings are by appointment so that the team can review the purpose, documents and bank route before the client arrives. This prevents a consultation from becoming an unprepared branch visit.

We first collect non-sensitive profile information: nationality, residence and tax residence, occupation or company activity, source of funds, expected transactions, countries, preferred date and whether the account is personal or corporate. Passport scans and financial documents should only be shared through the document method provided after initial contact.

The banking appointment is separate from our office meeting and is subject to branch and specialist availability. We confirm the planned sequence and explain what to bring. If your timetable is limited, tell us your arrival and departure dates before booking. A same-day outcome should never be assumed, because compliance review may continue after the branch meeting.

Banks, branch choice and appointment planning in Tbilisi

Bank of Georgia and TBC Bank both operate extensive networks and publish services for international or expat clients. Other Georgian banks may suit particular profiles. The nearest branch is not automatically the right branch: corporate files, premium relationships and non-resident cases may need a team familiar with the relevant onboarding process.

Our primary premium-banking relationship is with Bank of Georgia and SOLO. We can also assess other options, including TBC Bank, Credo Bank and Basisbank, depending on the applicant and current policy. A relationship or appointment does not oblige any bank to accept a case.

We compare the actual need: personal or business use, expected currencies, cards, transfers, turnover, countries, ownership, remote access and ongoing support. Applicants should review bank tariffs and product terms separately. Official starting points include Bank of Georgia’s non-resident page and TBC’s expat banking page.

Eligibility for foreigners and non-residents in Tbilisi

A foreigner may apply without being a Georgian citizen, but the bank assesses the complete risk and commercial context. Relevant factors include passport nationality, legal residence, tax residence, occupation, employer or business, source of funds, intended turnover, cash needs, transaction countries, counterparties and the reason for opening the account.

Living in Tbilisi can provide a clear local purpose, especially with a lease, employment, study, property or company activity. Visitors and non-residents can also have legitimate reasons. The explanation should distinguish current facts from future plans and should align with the documents. A Georgian telephone number or address does not replace income and source-of-funds evidence.

Sanctions exposure, prohibited activity, opaque ownership, unverifiable funds or payments with no connection to the declared purpose may prevent or delay onboarding. We conduct a preliminary assessment to identify obvious issues, but only the bank can make the decision.

Required documents for a Tbilisi banking appointment

Bring the original valid passport and the documents identified during pre-review. Depending on the profile, this can include residential-address evidence, residence permit, tax identification, recent personal or company statements, employment documents, payslips, contracts, invoices, tax returns and evidence of a sale, investment, dividend or inheritance.

A corporate applicant should expect company registry and constitutional records, ownership and management details, an ultimate-beneficial-owner chart, business contracts, invoices, licences where relevant, website or presentation materials and information about expected client and supplier countries. The representative’s authority must be clear.

  • Carry originals where they exist and complete PDF copies for review.
  • Do not crop statement pages or conceal ordinary transaction information.
  • Make sure names, dates and addresses are consistent or explained.
  • Confirm translation and certification requirements before paying for them.
  • Keep access to email and the telephone number intended for bank registration.

Typical sequence and realistic timeline

We plan the process around preparation, not a guaranteed number of hours. A straightforward personal file may be easier to process than a company with several owners, regulated activity or transactions across higher-risk jurisdictions.

  1. Before travel: eligibility review, route selection and tailored document checklist.
  2. On arrival: office or remote preparation meeting if needed and final document check.
  3. Bank visit: identity verification, questionnaire, interview and document submission.
  4. Compliance review: internal assessment and possible follow-up questions.
  5. Activation: account details, mobile banking, card order or collection and explanation of next steps.

Allow flexibility after the appointment. A bank may ask for more information after the client leaves the branch. We remain involved within the agreed scope, but cannot control the bank’s queue or approval date. Do not make a property closing, salary payment or urgent transfer depend on an unapproved account.

Arriving through Tbilisi International Airport

Shota Rustaveli Tbilisi International Airport (TBS) is southeast of central Tbilisi. The airport’s official information lists municipal bus route 337 between the airport and the city centre, and taxi service outside the arrivals terminal. Travel time varies with traffic, so do not schedule a bank appointment immediately after landing.

Official travel information can change. Check the Tbilisi Airport transport page shortly before arrival. Keep enough time for baggage, immigration, transport and hotel check-in. If your appointment is early, arriving the previous day is usually more sensible than relying on a tight connection.

BankAccount.ge does not sell flights, hotels or transfers. This travel information is provided only to help applicants build a realistic schedule around a pre-confirmed banking appointment.

Where to stay for a central Tbilisi appointment

Our office at Besiki 4 is close to Rustaveli Avenue and the central city area. Applicants often find accommodation around Rustaveli, Freedom Square, Mtatsminda, Vera or the Old Town practical for central meetings. The right choice depends on mobility, budget and transport rather than a particular hotel brand.

Before reserving a hotel, compare the exact property with the office and bank branch on a map. Tbilisi is hilly, street names can repeat in translated listings and driving time changes during peak traffic. A property described as “Tbilisi” may be much farther from the centre than expected.

We do not endorse or book accommodation. Choose a refundable reservation where possible until the bank appointment is confirmed. If several banking or notary steps may be needed, leave at least one flexible business day in the city.

Maps and day-of-appointment planning

Use the exact address Besiki 4, Tbilisi, Georgia when planning your office visit. Confirm the bank branch separately from our office; they are not the same location. We provide the bank destination after the appointment has been coordinated.

Bring your passport, requested originals and a charged mobile telephone. Arrive early enough to pass building or branch reception. If a translator is required, it must be arranged beforehand. Do not rely on public Wi-Fi for access to sensitive banking email or documents.

If you need notary, translation or courier steps, tell us during the initial assessment. Their locations and opening hours affect the route. Georgian public holidays and weekends can also reduce availability, so send the intended visit date before purchasing non-refundable travel.

Personal and corporate banking in Tbilisi

For a personal account, the bank focuses on the individual’s income, wealth, residence, tax status and intended activity. Common uses include living expenses, salary, savings, property-related payments and lawful international transfers. The account should not quietly become a collection account for unrelated third parties or a substitute for a company.

For a corporate account, the legal entity is the customer. The bank reviews ownership, controllers, business model, contracts, clients, suppliers, countries, expected turnover and source of initial funding. Georgian incorporation does not create an automatic right to banking, and a shell description with no operating evidence may be insufficient.

Separate the two relationships when both are required. Our personal vs corporate comparison helps identify the appropriate route. Corporate clients should share their structure before travel so that the representative, documents and branch process can be planned correctly.

Tbilisi or Batumi for your banking visit?

Tbilisi is normally the stronger choice for a first application that is complex, corporate, premium or likely to require specialist review. It is also where BankAccount.ge has its office. Batumi can be efficient for someone living in Adjara or already travelling through the Black Sea region, provided the relevant branch and appointment can handle the case.
