Tax-residency self-certification
During onboarding, a Georgian bank may ask for every country in which you are tax resident and the corresponding tax identification number. Citizenship, residence address and tax residence are related but not identical concepts, so the bank may request clarification when the information does not align.
Clients should answer accurately and update the bank if their residence or tax status changes. BankAccount.ge helps clients understand the onboarding question but does not determine tax residence or provide tax advice.
- Declare all relevant tax residencies
- Provide requested TINs or a valid explanation where unavailable
- Disclose US citizenship or other US tax indicators
- Update the bank after material changes
Common Reporting Standard (CRS)
CRS is an OECD framework for automatic exchange of financial-account information. Under the applicable Georgian rules, a bank identifies potentially reportable accounts using tax-residency information and due-diligence procedures.
For a reportable account, information can be supplied to the Georgian tax authority and exchanged with the relevant participating jurisdiction. Depending on the rules, reportable data may include identifying information, the account number, year-end balance or value, and certain income or proceeds. Reporting is governed by law; it is not an optional service selected by the client or consultant.
FATCA and US persons
FATCA is a separate United States reporting and withholding framework. A bank may request a US tax identification number, Form W-9, Form W-8BEN or other documentation depending on the account holder and the indicators identified.
US citizens and other US taxpayers generally have tax and foreign-account obligations that can exist independently of whether information is exchanged by the bank. A qualified US tax adviser should review the individual position.
What reporting does not mean
Automatic reporting does not mean that every transaction is sent directly to every foreign government in real time. It also does not replace ordinary KYC, anti-money-laundering monitoring, sanctions screening or transaction-specific document requests.
Confidentiality remains subject to banking and data-protection rules, but those rules include lawful disclosure to tax, regulatory and law-enforcement authorities where required.
Choosing a Georgian bank
Our primary premium-banking route is Bank of Georgia and SOLO, and our team participates in the SOLO Ambassador programme. Where another institution better fits the profile or current onboarding policy, we can also assess options involving TBC Bank, Credo Bank or Basisbank.
Each bank applies its own acceptance criteria, product terms and compliance review. A broader network gives us more routes to evaluate, but it does not create a right to an account or allow reporting obligations to be avoided.
