Who should apply for a personal Georgian bank account
A personal account is appropriate when the money, transactions and financial purpose belong to the individual account holder. Foreign residents, non-residents, employees, property owners, investors, retirees, students and people preparing to relocate may all have legitimate reasons to apply in the Republic of Georgia. The bank does not approve an account merely because the applicant can visit a branch; it evaluates whether the proposed relationship makes sense.
Common purposes include receiving salary or other personal income, holding savings, paying living costs, making property-related payments, using a debit card and managing lawful international transfers. The applicant should explain why Georgia is relevant. Living in Tbilisi or Batumi is one reason, but regular travel, a property purchase, a Georgian employer or company, family connections and a genuine relocation plan may also provide context.
A personal account should not be used as an informal business collection account or to move unexplained money for other people. If clients, customers or suppliers will pay the account, discuss whether an individual entrepreneur or corporate relationship is required before applying.
How personal-account eligibility is assessed
There is no universal list of nationalities guaranteed to be accepted. The bank looks at nationality, residence, tax residence, occupation, employer or business interests, source of income, source of wealth, expected balances, countries involved and the reason for choosing a Georgian bank. Current sanctions and internal risk policies also influence the review.
A foreigner does not always need a Georgian residence permit to apply. A non-resident can be considered, but may need a clearer explanation of the connection to Georgia and stronger supporting evidence. A local telephone number, rental agreement or property record can help describe the relationship but does not replace proof of lawful income.
We conduct a preliminary review before arranging an appointment. This helps identify missing documents, contradictions or a bank-route problem before the applicant commits to travel. Our assessment is practical guidance only: the licensed bank performs its own checks and retains complete discretion to approve, restrict or decline the relationship.
Define the intended use before the bank asks
A credible application gives the bank a practical picture of the account. State the currencies you expect to use, approximate monthly incoming and outgoing turnover, average balance, likely card use and the countries from which transfers will arrive or to which they will be sent. Explain the principal counterparties—for example an employer, your own overseas account, a property seller or a regulated investment provider.
Avoid unrealistic estimates. Declaring very high turnover without evidence can create questions, while declaring almost no activity and then immediately receiving a large transfer can trigger a later review. Estimates can change, but they should be reasonable on the application date and updated when circumstances materially change.
Georgia is not a substitute for transparent banking in the applicant’s home jurisdiction. The purpose should be lawful, understandable and consistent with tax residence. Cash deposits, transfers from unrelated third parties, crypto-related funds or payments involving higher-risk jurisdictions may receive additional scrutiny and should be disclosed during the initial assessment.
Documents for a personal banking appointment
The original valid passport is the starting document. Depending on the profile, the bank may request proof of residential address, residence status, tax identification numbers, recent bank statements, an employment agreement, payslips, pension or investment evidence, client contracts, tax returns and documents supporting a property sale, dividend, inheritance or other significant source of funds.
Documents should be recent, complete and readable. Names, dates and addresses should match or be explained. A screenshot of a balance is weaker than a complete bank statement showing the account holder, institution, period and transactions. Do not edit ordinary transaction lines merely to make the document shorter.
Translation, notarisation and apostille requirements depend on the document, issuing country, bank and route. Confirm the requirement before spending money. Bring originals to the Tbilisi or Batumi appointment where available and retain secure access to the complete digital file. See our detailed documents guide.
Income, source of funds and source of wealth
Income describes recurring earnings such as salary, self-employment, pension, rent, dividends or investment returns. Source of funds explains the origin of a particular amount expected to enter the account. Source of wealth is broader and describes how the applicant accumulated their overall financial position. A bank can ask about all three.
Evidence should fit the explanation. Salary can be supported by an employment contract, payslips and statements. Freelance income may require contracts, invoices, tax records and payment history. Sale proceeds should connect the sale agreement, ownership and receipt of money. Savings should be traceable over time rather than appearing as an unexplained recent balance.
We organise the evidence into a coherent narrative and identify foreseeable questions. This does not guarantee acceptance, but it reduces preventable ambiguity. If the first intended transfer is materially larger than normal income, explain it before onboarding instead of waiting for a transaction review.
Choosing a bank and the right service level
Bank of Georgia and TBC Bank offer extensive personal banking, and other institutions can be relevant for particular profiles. The correct choice depends on current acceptance policy, intended currencies, transfers, card use, digital access, premium service, residence and source of funds. A bank that suits one non-resident may not suit another.
Our primary premium-banking relationship is with Bank of Georgia and SOLO. Depending on the profile, we can assess other options including TBC Bank, Credo Bank and Basisbank. The relationship provides a practical communication route, not guaranteed approval or authority to make commitments for a bank.
Applicants should distinguish our professional fee from the bank’s own package, card, transfer and account fees. Review current tariffs before activation. Premium products can offer a dedicated banker and additional benefits, but paying for a higher package does not weaken KYC requirements. Compare Bank of Georgia and TBC for non-residents.
What happens before and during the appointment
Before travel, we collect the essential profile, select the likely route and issue a tailored checklist. Once the file is sufficiently prepared, we coordinate the bank appointment. Our registered office is at Besiki Business Center, Besiki 4, Tbilisi, Georgia; the bank meeting takes place separately at the confirmed branch or banking location.
At the bank, the applicant normally verifies identity, completes or confirms KYC information, explains the account purpose and submits requested evidence. The bank may ask questions directly and may continue its review after the client leaves. Be accurate and consistent rather than trying to guess a “preferred” answer.
Bring the original passport, requested supporting originals and access to the telephone number and email intended for registration. Do not schedule an urgent transfer or property completion on the assumption that the account will be approved immediately. Leave time for follow-up and, where possible, at least one flexible business day.
Personal-account pricing and realistic timing
Our professional fee for eligible in-person personal-account assistance is €200. It includes the initial profile and eligibility review, personal KYC guidance, a tailored document checklist, appointment coordination in Tbilisi and practical onboarding assistance within the agreed scope. Bank fees and third-party expenses are separate.
Remote personal-account opening is priced at €750 for a suitable case. It involves a more complex KYC and Power of Attorney route. Notary, apostille or legalisation, translation, courier, bank-package and card charges can be additional. We confirm feasibility before recommending remote documentation.
There is no guaranteed processing time. A straightforward, well-supported in-person case may move faster than a remote application or an applicant with complex income, countries or planned transactions. Appointment availability and the bank’s internal compliance queue also matter. See the complete costs and timelines page.
Account activation, cards and ongoing compliance
Approval is followed by practical activation: account details, supported currency balances, mobile or internet banking, telephone verification and card arrangements. The exact sequence depends on the chosen bank and product. Confirm card collection, delivery and digital-access steps before leaving Georgia if you are a non-resident.
Opening is not the end of KYC. Banks monitor activity and can request updated identification, tax residence, address, income or transaction evidence. Transfers that differ materially from the declared purpose may be delayed while the bank asks questions. Keep contracts, statements and source-of-funds documents available.
Inform the bank when residence, telephone number, occupation or tax status changes. Do not share login credentials or one-time codes with consultants, messengers or third parties. BankAccount.ge can assist with communication within an agreed service, but the client remains responsible for secure account operation and compliance with applicable tax and reporting rules.
Common personal-account mistakes
Applying as a walk-in visitor without first checking whether the branch handles the profile.
Describing the purpose only as “international banking” without a connection to Georgia.
Using incomplete screenshots instead of verifiable statements and contracts.
Declaring personal use while expecting business or third-party payments.
Omitting tax residences, counterparties, transaction countries or a prior decline.
Paying for unnecessary translation or apostille before the route is confirmed.
Assuming a consultant, premium package or local address guarantees approval.
Preparation cannot turn an unacceptable risk into an acceptable one, but it can prevent ordinary gaps from damaging a viable application. If another Georgian bank previously declined the case, disclose the attempt and any reason provided during our initial review.
Tbilisi, Batumi or a remote route
Tbilisi is our primary location and normally provides the broadest access to specialist, premium and non-resident banking teams. It is generally the most practical choice for a first personal application, especially where the purpose or source of funds needs explanation.
Batumi can suit applicants living in or visiting Adjara. We coordinate Batumi cases by prior arrangement and do not represent a permanent office there. Branch and specialist availability should be confirmed before travel. Review our dedicated Batumi banking page.
Remote opening may be considered when travel is not practical and the profile supports the route. It does not bypass KYC and may require certified originals and an interview. Compare the remote account service and Power of Attorney requirements before deciding.
Information to send for the first assessment
To check the route efficiently, tell us your nationality, country of residence, tax residence, occupation, employer or business activity, approximate monthly income, source of existing savings, intended account purpose, expected monthly turnover, incoming and outgoing countries, preferred currencies, visit dates and whether you prefer Tbilisi, Batumi or remote opening.
Do not send card numbers, passwords, one-time codes or online-banking credentials. Passport and financial evidence should be shared only through the document method provided after initial contact. If the account relates to a property purchase or relocation, include the current stage and realistic timing.
We reply with the recommended process, priority documents, professional scope and limitations. If the case appears unsuitable for the available route, it is better to identify that before travel. Start with the form below or WhatsApp our banking team.

Questions answered
Practical answers before you apply
Can a foreigner open a personal bank account in Georgia?+
Yes, a foreign citizen may apply. Approval depends on the complete KYC profile and the bank’s current policy.
Must I live in Georgia?+
Not necessarily. Non-residents may be considered, but they should clearly explain the purpose and connection to Georgia.
Is a passport sufficient?+
Sometimes a bank advertises simplified onboarding, but it may request address, tax, income, statements and source-of-funds evidence for an individual case.
How much does local assistance cost?+
Our fee is €200 for an eligible in-person personal-account scope. Bank and third-party costs are separate.
Can the account be opened remotely?+
Potentially. Our remote personal service is €750 for a suitable profile and may require a certified Power of Attorney and original documents.
Is approval guaranteed?+
No. BankAccount.ge is an independent consultancy; the licensed bank alone decides approval and product availability.
Can I use the account for freelance clients?+
Discuss the activity before applying. Regular commercial receipts may require an entrepreneur or corporate account rather than personal banking.
Can I open in Batumi?+
Potentially, by prior coordination. Tbilisi normally offers broader specialist availability.
How long does approval take?+
No fixed period is guaranteed. Documents, profile complexity, appointment availability and internal bank review affect timing.
Does a Georgian account change my tax residence?+
No. Opening an account does not by itself change tax residence or remove reporting obligations.
